From Shelter to Strength: CALMHAF and NAPTIP Partner to Heal Trafficking Survivors

01

On 14 August 2026, the Cope and Live Mental Health Awareness Foundation (CALMHAF) paid a courtesy visit to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Enugu State Command. The visit formed part of deliberate efforts to build a collaborative relationship and explore joint initiatives that advance mental health support for vulnerable populations.

CALMHAF was represented by Co-founder Mrs. Uzoamaka Nwachukwu who led the team, Resource Centre Manager Precious Mmesoma, and volunteer Munachi. They were warmly received by the Enugu State Zonal Commander, Mr. Ukpai Jonathan, together with members of the NAPTIP staff.

Victims of human trafficking frequently experience profound psychological trauma, including post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, loss of self-worth, and long-term emotional distress. Physical rescue and shelter alone are insufficient for full recovery; sustained counselling and psychosocial care are essential for rehabilitation, reintegration, and the rebuilding of lives.

By engaging NAPTIP, CALMHAF directly aligns its expertise with a high-need group whose mental health challenges are both severe and often under-addressed. The partnership therefore addresses a critical gap: ensuring that survivors receive holistic support that combines protection with evidence-based mental health interventions.

During the discussion, NAPTIP specifically requested that the Foundation extend its counselling and mental health services to the trafficking survivors currently residing in their shelter. This request underscored the strategic significance of the engagement for several reasons including:

  • Direct service opportunity (An immediate pathway to deliver trauma-informed care where it is most needed).

  • Complementary mandates (NAPTIP focuses on rescue and protection, while CALMHAF specializes in mental health support).

  • Expanded reach and sustainability

Model for future joint projects

The Cope and Live Mental Health Awareness Foundation expresses its sincere appreciation to NAPTIP Enugu State Command for the warm reception and openness to partnership and looks forward to jointly delivering meaningful, trauma-informed mental health support to trafficking survivors and other vulnerable individuals.

Collaboration of this nature is essential for creating sustainable impact and ensuring that those who need specialised mental health care are reached effectively and compassionately.
