Teaching Kids to Respond, Not React
Anger is one of the most familiar emotions we experience. Sometimes, underneath the anger is frustration, fear, hurt or even helplessness. When we are angry, sad or overwhelmed, we are not always in the best state to make important decisions. Sometimes, we react before we've had the chance to understand what's really happening inside us.
That's where self-regulation comes in.
Self-regulation is the ability to notice our thoughts, feelings and physical reactions, and choose how we respond even when things get difficult.
Self-regulation doesn't mean ignoring your feelings or pretending you're not angry. It means learning to understand your feelings without allowing them to completely control your actions.
At our just concluded GlowPulse 2.0 Emotional Intelligence Bootcamp for kids (ages 8–15), organised by the Cope and Live Mental Health Awareness Foundation and COLI Mental Health Academy, an IAOTH-accredited training provider, this is exactly what we practised. Self-awareness sessions helped children explore emotions, triggers, strengths, values and personal standards. They also received focused teaching on self-regulation, bullying and cyberbullying—so they could name what they feel, pause, and choose a safer response instead of exploding or shutting down.
The benefit is not a child who never gets angry. It is a child who can recognise “this anger is covering hurt or fear,” breathe, set a boundary, and still stay kind to themselves and others.
Learning how to regulate yourself is a skill—and like every skill, it takes practice.
About GlowPulse
GlowPulse is organised yearly by the Cope and Live Mental Health Awareness Foundation and COLI Mental Health Academy. It serves children and teens through sessions on emotional intelligence — including anger management, self-regulation, self-awareness and empathy — as well as digital literacy and screen-addiction awareness, play therapy, resilience training, anti-bullying and cyberbullying tools, vocational and career awareness, healthy boundaries, soft skills, stress and anxiety management, and practical modules such as CPR and cancer awareness.
Every part of the bootcamp is designed for measurable outcomes, including the multi-session structure itself. The opening ceremony and meet-and-greet create initial awareness and launch the programme. Later sessions on vocational training, games, play therapy and resilience, followed by the closing celebration, provide natural moments to reinforce the message.
Individual skills — such as self-regulation or online safety — are linked to broader results: calmer homes, stronger school performance and clearer career readiness. GlowPulse is a high-visibility entry point into wider mental health support, connecting families to our ongoing work, including free counselling, school outreach and COLI Academy courses.
