United by Unique – Cope & Live, UNTH Foundation, Oncoclinics Deliver Unstoppable Hope in Enugu

01

On Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the Cope and Live Mental Health Awareness Foundation (CALMHAF), with partner UNTH Foundation and in collaboration with the Oncoclinics, successfully conducted an impactful outreach program at the Radiotherapy Department, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State. Held in observance of World Cancer Day, the event brought together healthcare providers, cancer patients, families, and community members to emphasize holistic care that addresses both physical and emotional needs.

This collaborative effort reflects the power of partnership in delivering people-centered care, aligning with this year's World Cancer Day theme of unity and unique individual experiences in the fight against cancer.

Representatives from the three organizations—Cope and Live Mental Health Awareness Foundation, UNTH Foundation, and Oncoclinics—joined forces to make the day meaningful, building on prior media appearances on Afia TV, Afia Radio, Urban Radio, and Dream 92.5 FM to promote the event and raise awareness.

The outreach highlighted the dedicated commitment of the organizers to supporting cancer patients and their families through specialized mental health services. These include:

  • Early mental health screening to identify distress, anxiety, depression, and other emotional concerns.

  • Mental Health Awareness and education sessions aimed at reducing stigma and equipping individuals with practical coping skills.

  • Individual counseling offering compassionate, personalized support for treatment-related stress, fear, grief, adjustment difficulties, and the stages of grief—including how prolonged denial can serve as a temporary buffer but may delay help-seeking and treatment adherence if unaddressed.

  • Broader psychosocial support, such as peer support groups, resilience workshops, caregiver guidance, and referrals to specialized resources.

The aim of the joint outreach was to reduce isolation, enhance emotional resilience, improve quality of life, and ensure no one faces the mental health burden of cancer alone. The event underscored the urgent need to incorporate mental health care into all aspects of cancer treatment for truly comprehensive support. Unaddressed negative emotions can exacerbate anxiety and depression, weaken coping mechanisms, and reduce overall resilience—making proactive intervention essential.

The program featured open dialogues, survivor stories, education on emotional well-being, and direct support to empower patients, families, and healthcare providers.

For ongoing support, cancer patients and families can reach out via CALMHAF's toll-free counseling line at 08000002673 or visit the website at www.copeandlive.foundation.

Together, through continued collaboration and compassionate action, we can foster stronger emotional well-being alongside physical healing—proving that in the journey against cancer, no one has to walk alone.
